Last week thanks to Brit Mums I became a morrisons mum, I was given £80 to spend in Morrisons on shopping. I wont lie I used to shop at Morrisons a few years ago, but then as the shopping bill started creeping up we made the switch to Tesco.
Our usual monthly supermarket shop without nappies which I buy in bulk, or meat which we get from a local discount butcher comes in at around £70 and we top up bread as and when we can fill the freezer from the reduced aisle, so I was intrigued as to how much over the £80 our usual shop plus some extras for a bank holiday picnic and roast meal would be.
The 1st thing that impressed me when we arrived at the kingswinford store was the availability of a parent and toddler space, as we are lucky to get one at our usual supermarket, and also the availability of a double trolley, as LA either has to seat in a reclined baby seat or we need 2 trolleys as our usual supermarket has very few double seated trolleys which i would deem safe for my children in the fact that they dont often have 2 working seat belts.
So on to the shop itself, as we entered the store the 1st thing I noticed was how colourful and inviting the fresh fruit and vegetable’s looked. This immediately sent us off list and we put some bananas in the trolley, this is something i’d usually buy from the aldi by JR’s school.
We’d decided that for our special bank holiday treats we would buy a cake to take to Mr M&TTT’s Nan who we were visiting after we’d been shopping, and as we were spending the weekend away with a planned trip to Red house farm on Saturday afternoon we would have a picnic there. As LA only has a limited range of milk free cereals she can eat we also brought a kelloggs variety pack to take with us on our overnight stay so at least she could have some breakfast on Sunday morning. I also thought that it would be nice for Mr M&TTT to come home to a nice roast dinner after work on bank holiday Monday.
whilst walking around the store I noticed the noticed lots of new Morrisons I’m cheaper signs, where their new prices aren’t just offers but are new prices that are here to stay.
Unbeknownst to me Mr M&TTT was was totting up or total on his phone as we shopped and as we decided to get our usual items 1st after we’d completed our normal item shop he proudly told me we had only spent £45 a full £25 less than our usual tesco shop, which really blew my mind, We then brought the planned extras and a little treat for me some usually unaffordable special K cereal and a salad from the salad bar for my dinner. I felt for sure that we’d now be over our allotted £80, I was again shocked to find our total spend was only £60.
I couldn’t believe how many bags we managed to fill, it was a good job that we’d taken the pushchair out of our car boot before going to the shop.
On Saturday as we headed to manchester our plans to go straight to the farm changed and we instead went to investigate around Manchester, taking in the Etihad stadium and media city so we ate at various points and stop offs along the way rather than having a picnic at the farm. However this meant that I couldn’t get any nice picnic pictures along the way. But what I can give is a cost breakdown of the picnic
- pack 6 pom bears £1
- vine ripe cherry tomatoes 39p
- pack 6 sausage rolls £1.19
- pack 4 pork pies £1.05
- pack of sandwich ham £1.65
- cocktail sausages £1.00
- mini scotch eggs 83p
- quiche £1.00
A total cost of £8.11 which if you break it down to per person cost us £1.62 each and even though we only brought the ‘M’ saver range it was all really tasty.
On Monday morning I prepared a Slow cooker Roast pork tea.
We used stuffing and gravy from our cupboard stock but everything else was brought as part of our Morrisons mum shop.
- Pork Joint £4.14
- potatoes 39p
- carrots 39p
- tinned peas 21p
- tinned carrots 20p
A total cost of £5.33 which if I break it down comes in at roughly £1.06 per person looking online the gravy would have cost us 20p and the stuffing 15p adding just an extra 35p to the meal.
I am sure that as a family we shall be returning to Morrisons as regular shoppers now
Disclosure: We were given £80 to spend in Morrisons as part of Brit Mums Morrisons mum and dad campaign, all thoughts are my own
Thanks for sharing your experience at Morrisons and I love the idea of the pork dish. Commenting for myself and on behalf of BritMums and thanking you for taking part
Hi, great post, I’m just finishing my #morrisonsmum post. How did you cook the pork in the slow cooker??
Just put it in with the potatoes and carrots and left it in on low all day
I’m so envious of your food bill! Our teenagers eat so much more than they used to…boo! 😀
