Geocaching – A new hobby!

What is geocaching? Well it’s basically looking for hidden treasure using co-ordinates and clues. The dictionary definition is

noun: geocaching
a form of treasure hunt using GPS, in which an item is hidden somewhere in the world and its coordinates posted on the Internet, so that GPS users can locate it.

About 5 years ago, before we had GPS on our phone me and my dad found out that there were a couple of geocaches close to where we live. Having no GPS we tried just printing the co-ordinates and hoping. Needless to say we didn’t find any.
A year or so later I got an android phone and downloaded the geocaching app – I still didn’t find any of the geocaches I knew were achingly close. In fact I now know I could see one from my lounge window.
With having 2 children to look after by now I gave up.
Last Sunday however I was idly nosing about on twitter while I waited for the tiny 3 to go to sleep and I saw a tweet about geocaching by My Two Mums this tweet instantly set off a spark that reignited the frustration I felt knowing that there were or used to be at least 3 geocache’s I walked past every day on the school run.
So I asked what the best app would be to use on iOS they and Ruth Arnold both said the official app.
So I downloaded it, set myself up with a geocache account, and instantly checked whether or not they were still there, they are. Not only that they’ve been joined by several others all within a 1 mile vicinity of my house.
So on the way to pick up JR from school Monday afternoon me, TP and LA went to try to find our 1st Geocache, the one I could see the location of from my old front window.
We had success! We found it and we’d caught the bug, on Friday we found our 2nd Geocache and we can’t wait to find our next one.

  1. Oooh another convert !! We started geocaching a couple of weeks ago and are totally hooked. It’s great fun and has shown us some fab places we’ve never spotted before, despite going very close by many times. My geocaching posts are here : http://madhousefamilyreviews.blogspot.com/search/label/geocaching and Elaine has started a geocaching linkie over at Fun As A gran (click on the badge on my later geocaching posts to go there).

Was there any treasure in the caches? We’ve got a little backpack of tiny toys and trinkets to swap over the loot we find which makes it even more exciting 🙂

    • We haven’t found any treasure caches yet, they only had log books in although the first one had lost its logbook. I know of a large treasure cache, that I almost found on Monday but I need to go back with gardening gloves and a long sleeve top because it’s hidden in ivy at the base of a tree.

  2. Well done on the start. It really does get very addictive. I have been out four times this week, some outings successful than others. I have a post to write up on them as well. Please feel free and join my linky, we can get the whole blogging world to join in if we rant enough about it!! (and yes you can link to more than one linky with a post)
