An Autumnal feed run

On Saturday 25th October 2014 we packed the car, strapped the kids in their seats and headed off down the M5 and A30 to St Brewards, Bodmin for a week of farm fun at Coombe Mill. We however didn’t tell the kids where we were going, and they squealed with delight when they saw the sign at the entrance to the farm. It was quite late when we arrived so we unpacked the car, made the kids their tea and settled them into bed for the night as we had already been febuary they knew what they would be doing the following morning, a tractor ride with Farmer Nick.

The kids rose super early on the Sunday morning and were very excited to get dressed and meet up with Farmer Nick and his tractor on the car park. It took me a while to convince them that as it was only 5.30am I didn’t think that the animals would be awake yet, but I assured them that I wouldn’t let them be late and miss the tractor.

With it being the last week of October and early morning when we got dressed for the feed run I put thick coats on the kids and nice woolly hats, i needn’t have bothered by time we got to the car park we were all too hot so we left the hats in the car. JR had been asking me all morning if he would be able to drive the tractor, as farmer Nick lets all his little helpers drive the tractor at least once during their stay at coombe mill. I had told him that it wasn’t up t me and he would have to wait his turn and that he’d definitely get a turn sometime during the week.

JR was not about to wait for later in the week and as soon Farmer Nick asked if anyone would like to drive the tractor his hand shot up like a rocket and sure enough he was picked to be the weeks 1st driver.

First stop of the day was to the pigs who were all very hungry and waiting very impatiently for their breakfasts, it was here that we learnt that pigs are naturally meat eaters but DEFRAS rules mean that they have to be vegetarian.

Next we went to feed the chickens, ducks and geese who have a massive field to run around in, the kids took great pleasure in running around after the chickens and ducks trying to catch them, however unfortunately on this occasion they were unable to catch one.

Then it was time to get back onto the trailer for a journey around the lake and to the donkeys, sheep, goats and fallow deer. When we were there febuary the baby goats had only just been born we were surprised to see how big they had grown in just 6 months.

From there we should have jumped back on the trailer and headed back to the car park to see the rabbits and llamas but the boys needed the toilet so we headed back to our riverside lodge for a quick toilet stop before heading into Newquay for the afternoon.

  1. We are going back to Coombe Mill at Easter and I think we may well have an early start on the Sunday as this time the children will know exactly what to expect! Sounds like you all had fun.

    • It is brilliant for all the family, and I really didnt mind the early start. We’ve booked again for next October although I may try to squeeze in a visit before then

  2. Happy memories of your first day back with us. I remember seeing how excited the children were running out to the tractor that morning. It was such a lovely week but it raced by so fast! Thank you for sharing with me on Country Kids
