Last thursday saw the 1st of 3 parents evenings that JR will have in year 1. To be honest I was not really looking forward to it, you see last year he wasn’t always the best behaved pupil in class and he didn’t always (ever) like to sit and do his reading or writing. Phonics seemed like a mysterious language that he just couldn’t quite work out when it came to blending the sounds.
To say I was proven wrong would be an absolute understatement, the teacher had no problems with him at all. In fact she was really surprised by the child that she got in her class. You see the report she got was of a disruptive child who wouldn’t read or do his work instead she could a child who
still fidgets and needs reminding to sit down sometimes.
doesn’t always finish his work because he’s easily distracted ~ but he at least does his best (what more can we ask of him really).
handwriting is much improved and is understandable, even though he sometimes forgets his finger spaces.
is always polite and helpful
is honest and says truthfully whether he has been awarded house points or not
is a friendly member of the class who can work well as a pair or in groups
and most importantly can and wants to read, in fact she is so pleased with the progress he has made since the start of term she now sends 2 books home per week and is looking to move him to stage 2 books.
I am so proud of my boy, I know he still has a long way to go to catch up his peers when it comes to reading and writing but i’m confident that if he keeps going as he is he’ll get there by the end of year 1.
