Mommy or Mummy

Over the past few weeks on social media I’ve been asked if I’m American or been told

Oh I didn’t realise that you’re American

. I’m not American I’m English or British if you’d rather. When I asked someone why they thought I was American they told me it’s because I call myself ‘Mommy’ not ‘Mummy’.
I didn’t realise that this was an American term my mom has always been Mom or Mommy. The playgroup I go to is called Moms and Tots, and school letters are usually addressed to mommy and daddy. It’s just what I’ve grown up with!
So I’m wondering if this is just local to me in the ‘Black Country’ in the West Midlands or if it travels further afield, what do you say ‘Mom’ or ‘Mum’ drop me a comment below!

  1. I must admit I’ve always thought mom and mommy were the American versions of mum and mummy. But I’ve noticed many parents refer to themselves as mom / mommy who aren’t American, I guess it comes down to personal preference and what you’ve grown up knowing.
